CAM SCALE EMERGED FROM THE SYDNEY GRAFFITI SCENE, AND FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS HE HAS BASED HIMSELF IN MELBOURNE. HIS EVOCATIVE PORTRAITS ON MASSIVE WALLS INCORPORATE FINE DETAILING MIXED WITH SPLASHY, DRIPPING TEXTURES: A CULMINATION OF YEARS OF PRACTICE AS A GRAFFITI ARTIST. SCALE’S WORK CONTINUES TO MATURE AND EVOLVE INTO A STYLE THAT SHOWCASES HIS FINER PRACTICE YET STILL ACKNOWLEDGES HIS ROOTS.

‘TRYING TO FIND A BALANCE’ GIVES AN INTIMATE VIEW OF HIS SOCIALLY AND GLOBALLY- CONSCIOUS MIND, EXPLORING THEMES SUCH AS POLITICS, CONTEMPORARY CULTURE AND MENTAL FRAILTIES. THIS BODY OF WORK IS BOTH BOLD AND VULNERABLE, THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND EMOTIVE. CREATED WITH ACRYLIC AND AEROSOL ON CANVAS, THIS COLLECTION IS A DEPARTURE FROM SCALE’S RECENT PUBLIC WORKS ON WALLS AND SILOS ACROSS AUSTRALIA AND INTERNATIONALLY.

ARTWORK: CAM SCALE / INTERVIEW: DAMO / PHOTO: P1XELS

CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE ON YOUR ARTISTIC JOURNEY?
I’VE BEEN PAINTING AND DRAWING SINCE I WAS YOUNG. IN HIGH SCHOOL I DISCOVERED GRAFFITI AND REALLY BECAME FIXATED ON MAKING ART. IT BASICALLY BLOCKED OUT EVERYTHING ELSE. I SOMETIMES WONDER WHERE I WOULD HAVE ENDED UP WITHOUT IT. THAT TRANSITIONED INTO PAINTING FINE ART MURALS AND CANVAS WORK. I NEVER CONSIDERED MYSELF AS ANY PARTICULAR TYPE OF ARTIST, JUST THAT I ENJOY PAINTING AND I’LL SEE WHERE IT LEADS.

WHY ART?
IT’S WHAT I’VE ALWAYS DONE. I NEVER HAD A CAREER PLAN, I JUST KNEW DIDN’T WANT A 9 TO 5. I’VE ALWAYS LOVED CREATING THINGS AND WANTED TO FOLLOW THAT PATH. IT’S BEEN A GRADUAL NATURAL PROGRESSION.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE, AND HOW IT’S DEVELOPED OVER TIME?
MY STYLE IS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY BOTH CONCEPT AND METHOD. YEARS OF PAINTING WITH OUTDOOR TECHNIQUES OR WHATEVER WAS AVAILABLE, HAS INFLUENCED MY STUDIO WORK. THEN VISA-VERSA. IT’S A CONTINUALLY EVOLVING PROCESS.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE TITLE OF YOUR SHOW, ‘TRYING TO FIND A BALANCE’?
IT’S A PLAY BETWEEN THE TRANSITIONING POINT OF MY OWN LIFE RIGHT NOW AND THE WIDER DUALITY WE EXPERIENCE IN OUR MODERN WORLD. AS WITH ALMOST EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE, IT’S ABOUT TRYING TO FIND THAT SWEET SPOT AND MAINTAINING IT. IT’S REALLY IS A BALANCING ACT.

WHAT THEMES ETC ARE YOU EXPLORING IN YOUR BODY OF WORK? WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THESE THEMES AND HOW/WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?
THE THEMES FOCUS ON THE TILT BETWEEN EXTREMES. THAT YOU NEED A LITTLE BIT OF EACH ONE, BUT TOO MUCH OF EITHER CAN BE DETRIMENTAL. WHETHER IT’S WITH STRUGGLES OF INNER SELF OR TECHNOLOGY, TO A WIDER VIEW OF SOCIETY, HISTORY AND OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE ENVIRONMENT.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE WILL TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR SHOW? WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO INSTILL IN THEM?
MAYBE JUST TO BE MINDFUL IN ALL THE DISTRACTION. THERE ARE ALWAYS TWO SIDES TO EVERYTHING, USUALLY MORE. TODAY IT SEEMS WE ARE EXPECTED TO SEE THINGS AS BLACK AND WHITE, FOR OR AGAINST. THERE IS ACTUALLY A LOT MORE GREY AREA. PEOPLE DO THINGS FOR ALL TYPES OF REASONS THAT ARE OFTEN NOT CLEAR. I THINK IT’S ABOUT TAKING THAT ON BOARD AND TRYING TO LOOK AT BOTH SIDES TO AN ARGUMENT TO FIND THE MIDDLE GROUND.

‘TRYING TO FIND A BALANCE’ OPENS 6PM, 11 OCTOBER 2018, AT KSR BAR, RIALTO MELBOURNE. VIEWING WEDNESDAY TO THURSDAY, 4 TIL 10PM UNTIL 31 OCTOBER 2018.
